Sunday worship service turns deadly in Yagba West community
Bandits have attacked an ECWA church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one worshipper and abducting several others during a Sunday service, once again raising alarm over the safety of worship centers in the region.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the church while worship was ongoing and immediately opened fire, creating panic among congregants. As people attempted to flee, the assailants seized several worshippers and forced them into the surrounding bush.
Pastor, Worshippers Abducted as Community Panics
Sources in the community confirmed that those abducted include the church pastor and other members of the congregation. Although residents attempted to raise alarm, the attackers escaped before help could arrive.
The killing of a worshipper during the attack has thrown Ejiba into mourning, while families of the abducted victims continue to wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.
Authorities Launch Security Response
Meanwhile, security agencies have begun operations in the area to track the attackers and secure the release of the abducted worshippers. Local leaders have also called for increased security presence, noting that repeated attacks on churches have created fear and disrupted normal community life.
Residents say the latest assault reflects a growing pattern of violence targeting Christian worshippers across parts of the North‑Central region. As a result, many have urged both state and federal authorities to take stronger action to protect vulnerable communities and places of worship.
