In a sweeping crackdown, troops from the Nigerian Army 6th Division have arrested 19 suspects and dismantled 43 illegal crude oil refining sites across the Niger Delta region. As Nigeria grapples with the persistent challenge of oil theft, these operations underscore the military’s commitment to halting economic sabotage and securing the nation’s vital assets.
According to reports, the 6th Division, headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, launched these operations between October 28 and November 3, 2024. Troops intercepted a large wooden boat carrying over 150,000 liters of stolen crude oil in the Kula area of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area. Additionally, they seized another boat with 50,000 liters of crude oil and dismantled three illegal refining sites, confiscating cooking pots filled with 20,000 liters of diesel. With these moves, the army demonstrates its resolve to combat oil theft head-on, particularly in regions where these illicit activities have been thriving.
Moreover, soldiers expanded operations into Bayelsa State, targeting two illegal refining sites at Boma Creek in Southern Ijaw LGA, where they recovered storage tanks holding over 2,500 liters of stolen crude oil. They similarly disrupted activities in Obughene Creek, Southern Ijaw, seizing over 4,500 liters of stolen oil and another 3,000 liters at West Boma Creek. Notably, their efforts extended to Akwa Ibom State, where troops intercepted two vehicles loaded with 3,000 liters of illegally refined diesel.

Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6th Division, praised his troops for their success, urging them to make the Niger Delta inhospitable to criminals. His call highlights the military’s commitment to restoring order and safeguarding national resources.
