Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, recently confirmed ongoing efforts to restore power to the state following the vandalism of critical transmission towers. According to her, this disruption has affected Yenagoa and surrounding areas, leaving many residents and businesses in darkness. However, she assured citizens that the government, together with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is working to fix the damage as swiftly as possible.
The power outage began when vandals damaged several towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV transmission line. As a result, economic activities and essential services across Bayelsa have suffered greatly. To address this, state officials emphasized the need for increased security measures around key infrastructure, underscoring that the attacks represent not only criminal acts but also a form of economic sabotage. Consequently, the state has intensified efforts to protect and restore power facilities.
Government Intensifies Restoration Efforts
Koku-Obiyai reported that TCN has already managed to repair 13 out of the 16 damaged towers, and work continues on the remaining units. To ensure these repairs proceed without further disruption, additional security has been deployed to safeguard the installations. Moreover, she urged residents to support these efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity. Their cooperation, she noted, could be essential in preventing future attacks on Bayelsa’s critical infrastructure.
In recent months, local authorities, including the Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited (BECL), have collaborated with security agencies to protect vulnerable areas. Koku-Obiyai expressed gratitude to TCN for their quick response, while reassuring residents that the government remains committed to bringing stability back to the state’s power supply.
Long-Term Security Measures Considered
The recent vandalism has led the state to consider more robust, long-term solutions. Plans are underway to strengthen collaboration with security forces and local communities, ensuring enhanced protection for power infrastructure. Additionally, the government is looking into surveillance technology, which could help monitor high-risk areas and deter future sabotage.
Residents Look Forward to Lasting Solutions
With these efforts, Bayelsa residents are hopeful that lasting solutions will finally stabilize the power supply. Because small businesses rely heavily on electricity, these disruptions have caused significant strain on local enterprises. Officials project that if repair efforts continue smoothly, full power restoration could be completed within weeks, offering much-needed relief to the community.
