Popular Nigerian crossdresser, Bobrisky (Idris Okuneye), has once again found himself at the center of controversy after an attempted escape from Nigeria was foiled at the Seme Border on October 21, 2024. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) intercepted the social media influencer during a routine passport check as he tried to flee to the neighboring Benin Republic.
Bobrisky’s troubles began earlier this year when allegations surfaced regarding bribery linked to his legal issues. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had previously investigated him for money laundering and naira abuse, charges that reportedly landed him a six-month prison sentence. However, rumors soon emerged that Bobrisky managed to cut his prison time short, allegedly by bribing officials with N15 million. In a leaked audio recording shared by social media influencer VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky allegedly claimed that he paid EFCC officials to avoid serving his sentence.
A Border Bust Gone Wrong
Bobrisky may have attempted to escape Nigeria due to the increasing legal scrutiny surrounding him. The crossdresser, a figure known for his controversial lifestyle and online persona, was hoping to slip out of the country unnoticed. But the NIS had other plans. NIS spokesperson Kenneth Udo stated that officials flagged the crossdresser as a “person of interest” due to the ongoing investigation. Despite his best efforts, including the alleged hefty bribes, Bobrisky’s attempt to evade justice came to an abrupt halt when immigration officers detained him at the border
Further Investigations Underway
The NIS confirmed that officials are currently interrogating Bobrisky and will transfer him to relevant authorities for further action. His arrest follows a summons from the House of Representatives, which has also been investigating him for bribery and other charges. The NIS, in its statement, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and ensuring that individuals facing legal issues do not escape the consequences of their actions.
For now, Bobrisky’s freedom appears to be in question as authorities dig deeper into his case. It remains uncertain whether the controversial star can manage to evade the Nigerian legal system once again.
