O’Hara soon developed necrotizing fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating disease, and required emergency surgery.

Investigators revealed Kwan’s extensive knowledge of poisons, further showing that he had meticulously researched ways to commit murder without being detected. Additionally, Kwan’s background in toxicology enabled him to devise a highly calculated plan, using false identities and forged documentation to carry out the attack. Police discovered dangerous chemicals, including castor beans, arsenic, and mercury, at Kwan’s home, along with materials related to producing the deadly substance ricin. The discovery triggered a full-scale emergency response.
