The respected statesman died on Saturday, November 2, 2024, in Lagos after a long-fought illness. Utuama’s passing marks the end of an era, as his contributions to law, governance, and education left a lasting impact on the Delta community and beyond.
Professor Utuama was born on June 5, 1947, in Otughievwen, a community in Delta State’s Ughelli South Local Government Area. His early life shaped his commitment to justice and governance, and he went on to achieve an illustrious career in law. Before venturing into politics, he served as a law lecturer at the University of Lagos, where he mentored countless students, many of whom are now prominent legal practitioners.
As Delta State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice under Governor James Ibori, Utuama helped shape the legal landscape of the state, ensuring justice was a cornerstone of governance. His dedication earned him the role of Deputy Governor from 2007 to 2015 under Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. In this capacity, he continued to drive forward initiatives that strengthened Delta’s legal and political institutions.
Utuama’s passing has impacted many, with former Governor James Ibori expressing sorrow and praising Utuama as a humble and loyal servant of the state.
