The Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the presence of a new terrorist group, Lukarawas, operating in Nigeria’s North-Western region. This group, originating from Niger, has recently infiltrated northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states. Major-General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced this alarming development at a press briefing in Abuja, stressing that the Lukarawas pose a fresh security challenge in an already volatile region.
According to Major-General Buba, the Lukarawas emerged in the wake of a recent coup in Niger that disrupted the existing security cooperation between Nigeria and its neighboring country. Because of the weakened joint security framework, the group took advantage of gaps along the northern borders, entering Nigeria undetected. They established themselves in remote areas of Sokoto and Kebbi, where they utilized challenging terrains and local vulnerabilities to strengthen their foothold.
Interestingly, initial reports suggest that local communities inadvertently allowed Lukarawas to integrate, mistaking them for benign visitors. However, as the group’s activities began raising suspicion, authorities became aware of their presence. DHQ now recognizes that the Lukarawas have deeply entrenched themselves, creating a new layer of concern in a region already grappling with ongoing banditry and insurgency.
In response, Nigeria’s military has ramped up intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions to locate and dismantle the Lukarawas’ operations. Major-General Buba assured the public that security forces are prioritizing the group’s removal, alongside other security concerns, to prevent further destabilization in Sokoto, Kebbi, and neighboring areas. He urged local communities to remain vigilant, cautioning them against offering inadvertent support to suspicious newcomers.
Military Commitment and Public Vigilance
In light of this development, DHQ reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and stability. With intensified military operations underway, they aim to neutralize this threat swiftly.
Bolstering Community and Security Partnerships
Finally, Major-General Buba emphasized the importance of cooperation between security forces and communities. He encouraged residents to report suspicious activities, assuring them that a united front will help counter any attempt by Lukarawas to further destabilize the region.
