In a significant move, the Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective July 2024. This new allowance surpasses the national minimum wage by N7,000.
The announcement comes via a letter issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) on September 25, 2024. The letter, signed by the commission’s chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, details the adjustment in compensation for Corps Members.
Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, stated that this increment is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which establishes the minimum wage for workers at N70,000.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, previously advocated for enhanced welfare packages during a visit to the NSIWC chairman. Expressing gratitude for the timely decision, he emphasized that this increase would provide essential support to Corps Members, boosting their morale and encouraging them to better serve the nation.
