In a decisive move, President Bola Tinubu has removed Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Benue State. This development, which comes amidst ongoing efforts to enforce accountability in higher education, highlights the government’s commitment to due process.

Reports indicate that Salami suspended the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Innocent Ujah, without following proper procedures. Although the Federal Ministry of Education intervened and directed Salami to reverse the suspension, he refused to comply. Furthermore, he allegedly used threatening and abusive language towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary, which escalated tensions between the university and federal authorities.

Because of these actions, the President’s decision underscores a renewed focus on governance and integrity within educational institutions. Indeed, Tinubu’s administration aims to ensure that universities adhere to the laws and principles governing their establishment. Additionally, the government warned university councils against actions that disrupt academic stability, urging them to promote smooth operations.

Moreover, this move is not isolated. In a related decision, the President dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State. The Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of UNIZIK were also removed due to irregularities in their appointments. Clearly, these actions demonstrate a broader strategy to sanitize the governance structure of tertiary institutions.

Ensuring Accountability in Higher Education

Therefore, Tinubu’s administration is taking bold steps to address administrative misconduct and ensure accountability in Nigerian universities. By removing officials who act outside their mandates, the government is setting a precedent for ethical leadership.

Commitment to Education Reform

Finally, these developments highlight the government’s commitment to reforming the education sector. Strengthening the integrity of university councils and fostering accountability are crucial for academic excellence. As Nigeria’s universities strive for global recognition, adherence to due process remains key to their success.
