Gov. Abiodun Approves ₦77,000 Minimum Wage for Ogun Workers

Gov. Abiodun Dapo, of Ogun State, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦77,000 for the lowest cadre of workers in the state. This marks a significant increase from the national standard of ₦70,000, positioning Ogun as a leader in labor welfare across the country. The new wage, effective immediately, comes after a crucial meeting between the state government, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, and representatives of organized labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). The governor emphasized that this decision is part of his administration’s efforts to alleviate the economic hardships faced by state employees.

Furthermore, Abiodun urged the private sector to follow suit, calling for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue to establish fair compensation. He stressed that the new minimum wage should apply to both the public and private sectors. Additionally, the government will establish a monitoring team to ensure transparent implementation and prevent any exploitation of workers.

Labour Leaders Praise the Initiative

Labour leaders across Ogun State expressed their satisfaction with the governor’s decision. Comrade Hameed Benco, chairman of the NLC, noted that ₦77,000 is now the highest minimum wage in Nigeria, which sets a strong precedent for other states. In fact, most states have yet to implement such a competitive wage. Comrade Akeem Lasisi of the TUC shared his optimism regarding future adjustments for pensioners. He also promised that labour will continue engaging the government to ensure further improvements in worker welfare.

Ogun Sets a National Standard

This proactive wage policy underscores the Ogun State government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its workforce. As a result, other Nigerian states may soon be under pressure to follow Ogun’s lead in tackling the nationwide push for better wages. Ogun workers now feel more motivated, as they recognize their government’s commitment to prioritizing their welfare amid the current economic challenges.
