Gunmen terrorizing Anambra State launched a brazen attack on the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) on Sunday, November 24, 2024. The incident, which occurred along the Amesi/Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area at around 2:30 PM, left one vigilante member injured and their operational vehicle destroyed.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack on Monday through a statement in Awka, the state capital. He detailed how police-led security forces swiftly responded to the distress call. They rescued the wounded vigilante operative and rushed him to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Fortunately, the victim is now responding positively to treatment.
During the encounter, gunfire from the attackers hit the fuel tank of the AVG’s Toyota Frontier Van, igniting a blaze that completely razed the vehicle. Despite this, security forces maintained control of the situation and initiated intelligence-driven patrols to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
Meanwhile, just hours after the Aguata incident, another crisis erupted in Onitsha. At 4:30 PM, a fire broke out on Chukwunonso Street along Obodoukwu Road in Okpoko. Police operatives from the Okpoko Divisional headquarters swiftly cordoned off the scene to prevent opportunistic looting by hoodlums.
The timely intervention of the fire service successfully contained the blaze, preventing extensive damage. While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, the Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation to determine the origins of the incident and implement preventive measures for the future.
