House of Reps Probes Bobrisky Bribery Allegations Involving EFCC

The Nigerian House of Reps has taken action on the recent allegations involving Bobrisky, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). These developments follow claims made by social media activist Very Dark Man, who accused Bobrisky, a popular Nigerian influencer and crossdresser, of bribing officials to manipulate the legal system.

The controversy erupted when Very Dark Man (Martins Otse) released an audio clip in which Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, allegedly boasted about paying N15 million to EFCC officers. This payment, Bobrisky claimed, led to the dropping of money laundering charges against him. Moreover, Bobrisky alleged that the bribery allowed him to serve his six-month prison sentence in a luxurious private apartment rather than in a standard prison cell.

Bobrisky denied the allegations, calling the audio recording “fake.” Despite his denial, the allegations have raised significant concerns within Nigeria, with many questioning the integrity of both the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service. The EFCC subsequently summoned both Bobrisky and Very Dark Man for questioning, launching an internal investigation into the matter.

House of Reps Responds

During a plenary session, Patrick Umoh, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, called the allegations disturbing and damaging to Nigeria’s image. House of Reps adopted his motion to probe the claims, citing the need for accountability within Nigeria’s criminal justice system. The House also invited EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, Very Dark Man, and Bobrisky to provide clarity on the matter.

The House emphasized the importance of investigating the bribery allegations to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s law enforcement institutions. They also mandated the Committee on Financial Crimes and the Committee on Reformatory Institutions to conduct a thorough investigation and report back within three weeks.

A Broader Investigation

This investigation extends beyond Bobrisky’s alleged bribery. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has also called for a comprehensive review of the NCoS, particularly regarding the alleged preferential treatment of high-profile individuals in custody. The controversy has sparked debates about how wealthy and influential individuals might be bypassing the legal system, highlighting concerns about corruption within Nigerian law enforcement and correctional institutions.

Very Dark Man, known for his activism against corruption and fraudulent activities, has gained substantial public support for bringing these allegations to light. His social media platforms have become a hub for discussions about the case, with many Nigerians calling for a transparent investigation.
