The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it will announce the winner of the upcoming Ondo State governorship election on Saturday, November 16, 2024. With this prompt result declaration, INEC aims to enhance transparency and trust in the electoral process. Speaking on the preparation, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, highlighted the commission’s commitment to addressing key logistical challenges for a smooth, well-organized election day.
INEC has certainly learned valuable lessons from recent elections. Therefore, Professor Yakubu expressed confidence in the commission’s readiness to improve logistics and result management, assuring voters that this election will reflect these improvements. “We have learned a lot of lessons, not only from the last election but also from previous elections,” he said. “Basically, there are two challenges. The first is logistics for the election so that polling units can open promptly on election day. The second is result management, and my assurance to voters in Ondo State is that they are going to see fast improvement in these two processes.”
Meanwhile, as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible election, political parties and their candidates are scheduled to sign a Peace Accord on Friday, November 8, 2024. This initiative, led by the National Peace Committee under former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, aims to foster a violence-free environment. With all parties in agreement, INEC hopes for a smooth electoral process that upholds peace.
Additionally, INEC has identified potential flashpoints in the state where security may be required. Thus, the commission has notified security agencies to address any risks to the peace on election day. Furthermore, the commission reported that out of 64,273 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) distributed, 25,504 remain uncollected. Hence, INEC urges voters to collect their PVCs as soon as possible to ensure maximum participation.
Commitment to Transparency
INEC, moreover, has published the final list of candidates and their running mates for the 17 participating political parties. This move, the commission states, ensures transparency and allows voters to make informed choices.
Maintaining Integrity and Peace
As the election date approaches, INEC encourages political parties, candidates, and voters to adhere to guidelines and maintain peace. Ultimately, the commission remains dedicated to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, with prompt result announcements to reinforce the integrity of the process.
