Peter Obi demands independent probe after suspects allege officials supplied arms
Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has said that Insecurity Persists Due to Leadership Failure in Nigeria, and he has called for an immediate and transparent investigation after arrested suspected terrorists claimed that government officials supplied them with arms and ammunition.
Obi made the remarks in a statement he shared on social media on Sunday, December 14, 2025, following the circulation of a video in which alleged terrorists in Kwara State claimed that some persons within government structures provided weapons and other support.
Obi Questions Security Spending, Demand Accountability
In his statement, Obi said that Nigeria has consistently spent huge sums on security over the years, yet violence, banditry, terrorism and kidnappings continue to escalate. Consequently, he argued that the current state of insecurity shows deep problems with leadership, strategy and execution.
Furthermore, Obi pointed out that previous administrations once tracked and neutralised criminals using advanced technology and intelligence systems. Therefore, he asked why similar equipment and systems appear underutilised today, especially when terror groups have grown bolder.
He also referenced recent attacks and kidnappings, including the partial release of children abducted from a school, to highlight what he described as a lack of effective response from the authorities. According to Obi, the fact that suspected terrorists openly allege official complicity makes it imperative for an independent probe.
“Every government must protect the lives and property of its citizens,” Obi said in the statement. “When insecurity persists at this level, then there must be a fundamental review of leadership, strategy and accountability.”
Call for Independent Investigation and Better Leadership
Obi urged the government to invite independent investigators and civil society organisations to examine the claims, as well as to audit security spending and operations. He also emphasised that citizens deserve clear answers, not only assurances.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians have reacted strongly to the alleged confessions, with some demanding that authorities release evidence, while others express frustration over years of unresolved security challenges. Obi’s comments, however, focused on the need for competent, transparent and accountable leadership as the only sustainable path out of insecurity.
Obi concluded by saying that no society can thrive when citizens live in fear, and that effective leadership must prioritize the safety of all communities across the country.
