In a bid to ensure a more reliable fuel supply for Nigerians, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has announced that over 30,000 of its members are set to purchase petrol directly from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Following a recent meeting in Lagos with Aliko Dangote and his management team, this move marks a bold shift in Nigeria’s fuel distribution system. Consequently, IPMAN hopes this new approach will lead to lower prices and more consistent availability of fuel.

IPMAN’s National President, Abubakar Garima, highlighted that this partnership has the potential to revolutionize fuel supply in Nigeria. By cutting out intermediaries, IPMAN aims to streamline the entire distribution chain, which should, ideally, result in more competitive pricing for consumers. “This direct supply agreement,” Garima explained, “ensures a regular supply to our outlets. Therefore, Nigerians should expect both affordability and availability at our pumps.”

Moreover, the Dangote Refinery’s massive capacity of 650,000 barrels per day places it in an ideal position to meet Nigeria’s domestic fuel needs. Aliko Dangote has emphasized that the facility can produce over 30 million liters daily, far exceeding local demand. Thus, this partnership supports the national goal of reducing reliance on imports and, ideally, moving toward fuel self-sufficiency.

Nevertheless, the issue of pricing has emerged as a sticking point. In fact, IPMAN leaders have expressed concerns that Dangote’s pricing currently exceeds that of other suppliers. “Although we value our collaboration with Dangote, we still need to prioritize cost. So, if we find cheaper products elsewhere, we have to consider those options,” said IPMAN’s National Assistant Secretary, Yakubu Suleiman.

Addressing Pricing and Logistics

To resolve these challenges, IPMAN and Dangote are actively discussing ways to adjust pricing and logistics, aiming to deliver maximum benefit to the average consumer.

IPMAN Prospects for Fuel Stability

With this partnership, IPMAN expects to create a more stable fuel supply chain. Even so, both IPMAN and Dangote remain committed to finding solutions that ensure Nigerians enjoy affordable fuel prices.
