Lagos Government Sets New ₦85,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

Lagos Government Sets New ₦85,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

The Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially announced a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for state workers. This significant wage increase, one of the highest in Nigeria, comes as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to shield public workers from the economic challenges facing the country.

During an interview on Channels TV, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of this wage adjustment. He emphasized his government’s dedication to improving the welfare of Lagos workers, especially in light of the current economic challenges, including inflation and the removal of fuel subsidies. Previously, the Lagos government had increased workers’ salaries by ₦35,000 in January, bringing the total minimum wage above the national standard of ₦30,000. This new increase further reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring workers are financially secure in these tough times.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Dedication to Worker Welfare

The governor underscored the administration’s focus on providing financial relief for workers. “We understand that workers are the backbone of our state’s development,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “By raising the minimum wage, we are ensuring that they can continue to thrive, despite the economic headwinds.” He stated that the ₦85,000 minimum wage will take effect as soon as the necessary legislative approvals are complete. Moreover, this move aligns with Sanwo-Olu’s larger vision of creating a more equitable society for Lagosians.

Union Leaders React to the Wage Increase

Labor unions have widely praised the wage increase. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s proactive approach in addressing workers’ concerns. Funmi Sessi, the NLC Lagos Chairperson, emphasized that this adjustment comes at a critical time when many civil servants are struggling to make ends meet. She remarked, “This increase shows that the administration truly cares about the welfare of its workers.”

Furthermore, union leaders believe that this wage increase will help boost morale and productivity among state workers, ultimately improving the efficiency of public services. With this bold step, Lagos continues to set the standard for other states in Nigeria, positioning itself as a leader in worker welfare and compensation.
