Makinde: South-West Won’t Back APC in 2027

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde recently announced that the South-West region would not support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking at a political event in Ondo State, Makinde criticized the APC, asserting that its policies have caused widespread hardship for Nigerians. Consequently, he explained, many citizens in the South-West have become “wiser” and no longer believe in the APC’s promises. According to Makinde, the people who previously supported the ruling party are now disillusioned by the economic difficulties they face daily.

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in the South-West, Makinde emphasized that his party remains the preferred choice among residents. He pointed out that the PDP has strong grassroots support, especially among those dissatisfied with the APC’s approach to governance.

Makinde Counters APC’s Optimism in the South-West

Makinde’s statement came in response to recent remarks by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who had asserted that the APC would “capture” the South-West in 2027. In contrast, Makinde argued that confidence in the APC has significantly eroded, especially as economic policies continue to impact people’s lives. He referenced the upcoming election in Ondo as a test of public sentiment, where he believes citizens will express their frustration with the current administration’s policies.

Makinde also criticized the assumption by some APC leaders that the South-West remains a guaranteed stronghold. However, he countered this idea by suggesting that people in the region are now prepared to support the PDP. According to him, the South-West is ready to vote for change and move away from the policies that they feel do not serve their interests.

Growing Divide Ahead of 2027 Elections

Makinde’s remarks underscore the intense competition between Nigeria’s major parties as they vie for influence in key regions. As 2027 approaches, this competition has brought issues of governance and economic policy into sharper focus. In particular, Makinde noted that the South-West would play a crucial role in shaping the election outcome. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the PDP will attract increased support, appealing to voters disillusioned with the APC’s economic policies.

With Nigeria nearing the next election cycle, Makinde’s comments highlight a growing divide in regional support. Ultimately, he argued, the PDP would prove to be a strong alternative for South-West voters seeking a new direction for governance across the country.
