In a recent update, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed two new cases of the Clade Ib Mpox strain, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to three. This development has heightened public awareness, though health officials have assured that the overall risk to the UK population remains low.
Two newly confirmed cases emerged among household contacts of the first patient, diagnosed in London on October 30. The initial case involved an individual who had recently returned from an African country severely affected by the virus. As the patient received care, close contacts underwent testing, leading to the discovery of the additional cases. While news of these new cases may sound concerning, health authorities emphasize that transmission of Mpox primarily happens through close, prolonged contact, which aligns with these recent findings within the same household.
Both newly infected individuals are currently receiving specialized treatment at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London. Professor Susan Hopkins, the UKHSA’s chief medical adviser, addressed public concerns by explaining that household transmissions are common with mpox due to the close contact required for transmission.
