NAF Team Visits Italy for Acquisition of 34 Fighter Jets, Helicopters

A delegation from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recently visited Italy to finalize the acquisition of 34 new aircraft, including fighter jets and helicopters. This major acquisition is part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its air combat capabilities and modernize its fleet. The NAF team, led by senior officials, discussed procurement details for 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets and 10 Augusta AW109 helicopters.

The visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its air defense systems amid increasing security challenges in the country. These new aircraft, particularly the M-346 jets, will serve both as advanced trainer jets and light attack aircraft, making them versatile for a range of combat and defense missions. The AW109 helicopters, on the other hand, are expected to bolster Nigeria’s capabilities in reconnaissance, troop transportation, and counter-insurgency operations

Strengthening NAF’s Operational Capabilities

The acquisition of these aircraft comes at a critical time when the Nigerian military is facing heightened security threats from insurgent groups, banditry, and other armed conflicts. The new jets will replace aging platforms such as the Alpha jets, which have served for decades. The M-346 jets, known for their agility and advanced technology, will significantly improve NAF’s ability to carry out airstrikes, support ground forces, and conduct surveillance operations across the country.

Expanding Air Power for Future Missions

The collaboration with Italy also signals NAF’s intention to expand its reach in global defense partnerships. The AW109 helicopters, with their multipurpose design, will enhance the NAF’s capacity to respond to diverse mission requirements, ranging from humanitarian aid delivery to combat operations. The Italian defense company Leonardo, which manufactures both the jets and helicopters, has a long-standing relationship with Nigeria, having supplied several aircraft models to the country over the years

This latest acquisition reflects Nigeria’s broader strategy to maintain air superiority and improve military readiness in the face of evolving security challenges.
