The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recently intensified its efforts to combat counterfeit alcohol in Nigeria. In a sweeping raid across Mararaba Market, New Nyanya, and Masaka areas of Nasarawa State, NAFDAC officials seized large quantities of counterfeit and adulterated wines and spirits valued at over ₦41.2 million. This raid underscores the agency’s determination to eliminate harmful products from Nigerian markets, protecting consumers from potentially dangerous substances.
NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement team, equipped with precise intelligence, executed the operation across multiple wine shops suspected of selling counterfeit alcohol. These shops, known for distributing adulterated and low-quality spirits, have long been on the agency’s radar. As soon as the raid began, officials acted swiftly, uncovering various brands of fake and substandard alcoholic products. Officials confiscated these products, ensuring they would not make their way to consumers.
Following the seizure, NAFDAC announced it is actively investigating the importers and manufacturers behind these counterfeit items. The agency’s spokesperson emphasized that these fake alcoholic beverages not only violate health regulations but also put consumers at risk of severe health issues. Consequently, NAFDAC has vowed to pursue every legal avenue to bring those responsible to justice, aiming to curb the production and distribution of counterfeit alcohol in Nigeria.
To further safeguard the public, NAFDAC urges consumers to stay vigilant. The agency encourages the public to report any suspicious alcoholic products at the nearest NAFDAC office, promising swift action against violators.
A Call for Stronger Regulations
As NAFDAC intensifies its crackdown on counterfeit alcohol, many are calling for stricter regulations and more frequent inspections. Such actions could help ensure that Nigerian markets remain safe and free from harmful, unregulated products.
