The Nigerian Senate has raised an urgent alarm over the infiltration of terrorists from Mali and Burkina Faso into several states within Nigeria. This grave development underscores the increasing security threats faced by the country, particularly in the northern regions, as instability in the Sahel continues to escalate.
According to the Senate, these extremists, linked to notorious groups such as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and the Islamic State in the Sahel, are exploiting porous borders to spread their violent agenda. Consequently, states like Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina have reported heightened incidents of violence, including attacks on civilians and security forces. To address this looming crisis, the Senate has called for immediate action to strengthen border security, improve intelligence sharing, and deploy additional military resources to affected areas.
Moreover, the withdrawal of Western forces from the Sahel has created a dangerous vacuum, enabling extremist groups to expand their reach. Simultaneously, the rise of military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has further destabilized the region, leaving neighboring countries like Nigeria vulnerable. Indeed, the Senate emphasized that without swift and decisive measures, the infiltration could intensify, posing a severe threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability.

They urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intensify joint efforts in combating terrorism through coordinated military operations and socio-economic interventions aimed at curbing radicalization.
