Nigeria’s Grid Collapses Twice in 24 Hours, Sparking Outages

Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered two consecutive collapses within a 24-hour period, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power. The first collapse occurred on the morning of Monday, October 14, 2024, at around 10:40 AM, followed by another outage on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 5:10 PM. These consecutive failures have intensified frustration among Nigerians, who have been dealing with the nation’s unreliable power supply for years.

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), including the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), confirmed that the collapses affected power supply across several states, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. EEDC stated that all their feeders went offline as a result of the grid collapse, and they were awaiting further instructions from the National Control Centre to restore electricity. Eko Electricity Distribution Company also informed its customers about the second collapse, assuring them that efforts were underway to fix the issue.

Nigeria’s grid has long been plagued by outdated infrastructure and inadequate maintenance. The latest collapses come amid a challenging period for the grid, which had been struggling to maintain stability, with power generation falling to around 2,000 megawatts. These recurring outages create significant economic losses, particularly for businesses dependent on stable power.

This recent double collapse is part of a broader trend, as the national grid has suffered numerous failures in the past years. Since privatization in 2013, the grid has collapsed more than 130 times, frustrating citizens and impacting economic productivity.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for reforms and significant investments in Nigeria’s power infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity supply across the country.
