As the countdown to the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State begins, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep concern over alleged intimidation and harassment from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Agboola Ajayi, the PDP’s candidate, has publicly accused the APC of using fear tactics to undermine his campaign, claiming that these actions aim to disrupt the PDP’s efforts to reach voters effectively.
Ajayi did not hesitate to raise the alarm, addressing PDP youth leaders and supporters in Akure. He confidently declared, “We are not intimidated, and we will not back down.” According to him, the PDP remains fully committed to seeing the election through, encouraging the people of Ondo to vote without fear. He emphasized that Ondo is their state, and therefore, no amount of pressure would deter his team’s determination to mobilize voters across every ward and local government area.
Moreover, the PDP reported specific incidents involving alleged APC-affiliated thugs and local police officers. They cited an attack on a PDP ward meeting in Akure South, where, according to Ogedengbe, the party’s caretaker secretary, a group of 13 thugs stormed the event, injuring several PDP supporters. The PDP has described these events as calculated acts designed to frighten their supporters and sabotage their gatherings.
On the other hand, the APC quickly refuted these accusations. APC leaders responded assertively, dismissing the allegations as baseless and intended to fuel political tension. They asserted that their party remains focused on positive campaigning, highlighting their achievements and visions for Ondo’s future.
With election day fast approaching, the PDP has urged security agencies to step in and protect voters from intimidation. Ajayi emphasized the importance of a peaceful election environment, warning that the PDP would fiercely oppose any attempt to prevent voters from exercising their rights.
Tensions Rise as Election Day Nears
As Ondo’s election date draws closer, political tensions continue to rise. While the PDP remains adamant about resisting any intimidation, the stakes are high for both parties, who must ensure their supporters turn out to vote amid growing concerns about security.
