Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has voiced strong support for Nigerian nurses and other healthcare professionals looking to relocate abroad for better job prospects. During his visit to the St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, Anambra State, on October 14, 2024, Obi urged healthcare workers to pursue their dreams without hesitation.
In his speech, Obi emphasized that healthcare and education are vital pillars for a country’s development. With Nigeria’s population surpassing 200 million, he argued that there is no valid reason to discourage professionals, including nurses, from seeking greener pastures. Obi acknowledged the global demand for healthcare workers and encouraged those aspiring to work abroad to take advantage of international opportunities.
A Focus on Education and Healthcare
Obi highlighted that Nigeria’s focus should be on increasing the number of trained professionals, rather than limiting their chances to work abroad. He pointed out that remittances from Nigerians working overseas have become a significant source of revenue for the country. “Diaspora remittances can greatly boost Nigeria’s economy,” Obi stated, further explaining that this move is not an act of charity but an investment in the future of healthcare and education in Nigeria.
He called on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to stop blocking nurses from leaving for international jobs, stressing that professionals who wish to stay in Nigeria should also be supported through investments in local healthcare systems.
Obi’s Commitment to Supporting Healthcare Institutions
Peter Obi did more than just offer verbal support. He donated ₦20 million to the St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery, with ₦10 million allocated to both the nursing and midwifery departments. His commitment to advancing healthcare education doesn’t stop there; he plans to visit the College of Nursing in Anyingba, Kogi State, to assist them in gaining accreditation.
Investing in Nigeria’s Future
This initiative is part of Obi’s broader vision to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system by focusing on knowledge and skills development. His recent donations and advocacy for unrestricted opportunities highlight his belief in the potential of Nigerian professionals both locally and internationally. As he continues to support healthcare institutions, Obi aims to ensure that Nigeria remains competitive in a global workforce.
