Recently on Wednesday, Nigerian health stakeholders gathered in Abuja to advocate for a more integrated approach to HIV response across the country. Organized by CDC Nigeria, this biannual engagement meeting underscored the need for sustainable HIV treatment and prevention within Nigeria’s broader healthcare system. Acting CDC Country Director Suzanne Theroux emphasized that unified HIV efforts are crucial to bridging health equity gaps, especially for underserved communities. According to her, sustainable solutions must reach all corners of Nigeria to make real progress.
In addition, Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), urged both federal and state governments to take stronger ownership of HIV programs. He highlighted the importance of using data-driven strategies to ensure that resources reach areas with the greatest need. According to Ilori, government ownership and strategic decision-making will allow Nigeria to meet the UN’s 2030 target to end the HIV epidemic. Furthermore, he emphasized that states need to lead HIV initiatives, working hand-in-hand with the federal government to achieve nationwide success.

Stakeholders stressed that collaboration among federal, state, and local health agencies, alongside international partners, is vital to Nigeria’s HIV response. They agreed that a coordinated strategy would strengthen not only HIV outcomes but also the nation’s healthcare system. By building robust partnerships, Nigeria can improve health equity and become a model for HIV management in sub-Saharan Africa. This combined approach, they argued, not only enhances HIV program effectiveness but also contributes to a healthier, more resilient healthcare infrastructure.
