Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has stated that the Lagos–Calabar Highway audit request is part of his commitment to full transparency on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project. Recently, he issued a Lagos-Coastal Highway audit invite to further affirm this pledge. He made the announcement on Friday, December 12, 2025, while briefly opening the completed portion of Section 1 of the road to traffic.
Umahi Opens Records to Anti-Corruption Agencies
Speaking during the inspection, Umahi invited both the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to audit every financial detail of the project. This Lagos-Coastal Highway audit invite includes all records — including drawings, bills of quantities, and cost breakdowns — which are available for verification. He stressed that the Federal Government has nothing to hide.
Furthermore, the minister explained that the invitation was voluntary and aimed at boosting public confidence. He assured Nigerians that the project is executed with strict supervision and full disclosure at every stage.
Features and Progress of the Coastal Highway
Umahi described Section 1 — a 47.47-kilometre stretch from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village — as a modern, durable roadway that features reinforced concrete pavement, street lights, CCTV cameras, and emergency points. The Lagos–Coastal Highway audit invite also covers these innovative features and the way engineers implemented them. He added that construction on Section 2 continues to move quickly, as workers have already laid more than 13 kilometres of concrete pavement and completed extensive sand-filling.
Additionally, Umahi projected that Section 2 will be completed by December 2026, noting that major groundwork is moving ahead faster than earlier scheduled.
Safety Appeal and Project Funding
While opening the first section to the public, the minister urged motorists to drive carefully because workers are still on site. With the Lagos-Coastal Highway audit invite, he also reassured contractors that released counterpart funding will sustain the project and ensure no contractor is abandoned.
Commitment to Transparency
In conclusion, Umahi reaffirmed that the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is one of President Bola Tinubu’s key legacy projects and will remain open to independent scrutiny. He emphasized that transparency and accountability will guide every stage of the construction.
