Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has stated that the ongoing feud between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, is irreparable. Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics on October 13, 2024, Fayose remarked that the conflict had crossed a point of no return. He argued that the trust between Wike and Fubara had been shattered beyond repair, making any attempts at reconciliation almost impossible.
Fayose, a close ally of Wike, expressed disappointment at the developments in Rivers State politics, lamenting the strained relationship between the two leaders. According to Fayose, even if peace efforts were made, restoring trust between them would be difficult. “The matter has crossed the Rubicon. It’s too far in the day to call for reconciliation. The breach of trust is too deep,” Fayose asserted during the interview.
The fallout between Wike and Fubara began after the latter assumed office in 2023. While Wike had played a pivotal role in Fubara’s election, the relationship quickly soured, resulting in a significant political divide in Rivers State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The feud recently escalated, affecting local government elections and leading to violent clashes in various areas.
Violent Clashes in Rivers State
The Wike-Fubara feud contributed to violence during local government elections across Rivers State. Political tensions erupted into full-blown confrontations in local government areas such as Eleme and Ahoada East. Council secretariats were attacked, and gunfire echoed as factions loyal to both leaders battled for control. Despite efforts from President Bola Tinubu to mediate, the conflict persists.
Fayose’s Call for Caution
Fayose stressed that rebuilding trust between the two politicians seemed unlikely at this point. He urged political leaders in Rivers State to handle the situation carefully, as the ongoing crisis has weakened the PDP, which is already struggling after its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
