In a recent announcement, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, asserted that his administration would not halt ongoing demolition activities in Abuja, despite strong opposition from civil society organizations and activists. These demolition exercises, according to Wike, target illegal structures and settlements that compromise the city’s master plan and security.
During a visit to the demolished Ruga settlement, Wike made it clear that he remains undeterred by what he described as blackmail attempts from various advocacy groups. Standing alongside heads of FCT security agencies, he reaffirmed his commitment to positioning Abuja as a leading global city, where order and security prevail. By removing illegal structures, Wike believes that the administration is paving the way for more organized urban development, although critics strongly disagree.
Moreover, Wike announced that certain demolished areas are being considered for new bus terminals to streamline transportation and enhance business activities in the city. This move, he explained, aims to ensure the safety and orderliness of Abuja’s rapidly growing population. For many residents, however, the demolition has already caused significant hardship, with activists highlighting the displacement of more than 10,000 people in the Ruga settlement alone.
Activists Call for a Presidential Intervention
Amidst the growing tension, activists, including human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju and social media influencer Vincent Martins Otse (known as VeryDarkMan), have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene. They argue that these demolitions disregard the rights and welfare of the affected communities. Many activists continue to advocate for more humane approaches to urban development that consider the livelihoods of low-income residents.
Community Engagement for Sustainable Solutions
In response to these concerns, Wike directed community representatives to engage with security agency leaders and relevant directors. He encouraged them to provide suggestions on how to address the challenges posed by illegal settlements. Moving forward, the administration aims to balance urban development with the voices of residents, although Wike insists that safeguarding Abuja’s master plan remains the primary objective.
